According to a descendant of Anna, their family story is that the Fosters and Mehls came from Germany together. Anna's mother died, and she didn't get along with her stepmother, so went to work on Mehl dairy farm in Brooklyn or Queens. She married Phillip Mehl, approximately 18 years older. They moved to Connecticut in 1905. 

 She may be the 'Maggie' listed with her father in the 1880 census.  According to email communication from a descendant of Anna Fitting Mehl, Jacob remarried after his wife Catherine Foster passed on.  This means that he is most probably the Jacob Fitting, age 56(!) in the 1880 US Census living on West 38th Street in New York City with wife Kate, age 34 from Germany, and (her?) children John Henry Geiler age 12, Maggie 10, George 8, Lewie 5, Annie 13; and a 3 month old daughter Lizzie Fitting. {ED 395, p. 19}
