John Fernihough was baptised on 5th December 1752 at Flintham in Nottinghamshire, son of Elizabeth Fernihough, formerly Aram, and her husband John Fernihough, a farmer. When young John was still very young the family left Flintham and moved about nineteen miles south to Willoughby on the Wolds, where John's younger two brothers were baptised in 1755 and 1759.

In 1764, when John was eleven years old, his father died. After his death the family appears to have returned to the Flintham area, settling in the neighbouring village of Hawksworth.

John was married at Hawksworth on 8th April 1776 to Ann Machin. John and Ann went on to have seven children together. The first six were baptised at Hawksworth between 1776 and 1789, after which they moved to the nearby town of Newark, where their youngest daughter was baptised in 1791. John's mother died at Hawksworth in 1780.

In Newark, John worked as a boat master.

John's eldest daughter married in 1799 at Flintham, near Hawksworth.

John died in 1809 and was buried back at Hawksworth on 27th November 1809. He was about 57 years old. He left a will which left all his personal estate to Ann for her lifetime (or until she remarried), after which it was to be split between their children. Ann survived John by nearly 20 years.
