Ann Machin's origins have yet to be established. The age quoted when she died suggests she was born around 1751. Her first confirmed sighting is on 8th April 1776 when she married John Fernihough at Hawksworth in Nottinghamshire.

Ann and John went on to have seven children together. The first six were baptised at Hawksworth between 1776 and 1789, after which they moved to the nearby town of Newark, where their youngest daughter was baptised in 1791. In Newark, John worked as a boat master.

Ann's eldest daughter married in 1799 at Flintham, near Hawksworth.

John died in 1809 and was buried back at Hawksworth. He left a will which left all his personal estate to Ann for her lifetime (or until she remarried), after which it was to be split between their children.

Ann survived John by nearly 20 years. She also outlived her daughter Elizabeth, who died in 1817, and her son Thomas, who died in 1819.

Ann spent the last four years of her life confined to her bed. She died at Newark on 30th May 1829. She was said to be 77 years old. She was buried back at Hawksworth three days later.
