John was a private in the War of 1812 in the 7th Regiment (Perkins Battalion) of the Misssissippi Militia per www.oldhuntsville.com/p581.html

John arrived in Tipton County about the time of its formation in Oct 1823 and made several land transactions in Tipton County (first on 28 Dec 1823 Deed Book D-86). "At its December 1824 term the [Tipton County] court appointed Marquis Calmes, John Eckford, Robert G. Green, Elias Pope and Alexander Robinson commisioners to lay off the county seat into town lots, sell the same at public sale, and erect a court house and jail. The sale of lots took place April 12, 1825, and by July 1 of the same year the court house, a small frame structure, was conmplete and ready for occupancy."

John had a business partnership with Marquis Calmes (county sheriff 1830-38) and is listed in the 1830 census with wife, 3 sons and 1 daughter.

His will is recorded in Tipton County, Will Book A, pg 27.

  "I John Eckford being of sound and perfect mind and memory do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that I do give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Eckford all my real and personal property of what kind and nature soever.  I give and bequeath to my said wife Elizabeth whom I hereby appoint sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament so long as she remains a widow.  And I do hereby order and decalre that my last Will is that if my said wife Elizabeth should marry that all my real and personal estate shall be divided between said Elizabeth my wife and her four children to wit Francis M. Eckford, Martha B. Eckford, James H. Eckford and John F. Eckford and I do further desire that said Elizabeth shall give to any of the within named children any of the property when she sees fit.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this first day of May in the year of our Lord 1833.
 "Signed, sealed, published and delivered by the above John Eckford to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who hereunto subscribe our names as witnesses,
    Jacob P. Davis    John Eckford
    Willian Goodwin"

Recorded September term 1833. Elizabeth with Joseph White and Marquis Calmes posted bond of $2000.
