He was living in sister Martha's household in Columbus in 1850. He and wife Martha died within 2 months of each other. Their joint tombstone in plot 33XX in Friendship Cemetery is broken and lying underneath a nearby magnolia tree. "We meet to part no more In memory of James H. Eckford He died May 1? 1858 Aged 36 years He said in death, I am not afraid to die All is right, my trust is in God Also Martha A. Consort of James H. Eckford broken March 29th 1858" broken

His will (dated 28 Apr 1858) makes his mother guardian of all children [who besides Melville?) and assets and mentions a sister-in-law Anna Leigh.
