John Duncan, b. ca. 1753, m. Elizabeth Patterson, Dec. 29, 1792, d. January 13, 1823. Elizabeth dau. of James and Elizabeth Patterson, b. 1768 in New Jersey, d. January 29, 1855. Tradition from Mrs. Sarah Ruth Duncan Holland, Green Sulphur Springs, West Va. given to Mrs. T.B. Kitchen in Sept. 1951. (Mrs. Holland was gr. gr. grandau. of John and Elizabeth and had their bible). She stated that JOHN DUNCAN came across the Blue Ridge Mountains with the Pattersons and often carried Elizabeth and said that he would marry here when she grew into womanhood.

Records of Augusta Co. Va. Chalkley, Vol. II, pg. 74 - Simon Cockrell vs. John Duncan. S.O. 356; N.S. 112. Bill refiled 18 May 1796. In 1770 Wm Herbert made a settlement upon waste and unappropriated land on Cubb Creek in Washington Co and occupied it until 1776, when his overseer was killed by the Indians when Rawlen Duncan took possession. Herbert d. testate in 1776 which was proved on Sept. 3, 1776, Fincastle Co. leaving Wm. Herbert heir-at-law, from whom Orator (Cockrell) purchased Rawley obtained a certificate of settlement in 1773. Rawley Duncan d. intestate leaving JOHN DUNCAN his only (oldest) son and heir. Townsend Duncan is now in possession (1798).
Benjamin Nicholson deposes in Clarke Co. Ky 6th May 1798, that in 1775 he knew Rawley Duncan to purchase the tract from James Nalle...
History of Summers County, West Virginia, by James H. Miller, 1907, The Duncan Family, p. 461. "John Duncan was one of the first settlers on Lick Creek, in Green Sulphur District. It is impossible to give the exact date of his location, but it was sometime prior to 1800. He was from Shenandoah Co. Va and married Elizabeth Patterson. He d. in 1823, and it was at the house of his widow on the old Duncan place on Lick Creek, that the first Baptist Church in that region was organized in 1832. he was an Indian Fighter... he was the father of 11 children, six boys and five girls, the three boys who were known to the writer, were John, being the oldest, who resided on Mill Fork, almost in sight of Green Sulphur Springs, where his son, Harvey Duncan, now lives, who m. a Miss Adeline Hix, sister of John and William Hix, and aunt of Robert Hix.
