John Clayton or an unnamed brother, not identifiable in the faded wi ll of his father, was certainly the father of Thomas Clayton of Rudgwic k, Sussex County.
Time line: In 1539 through 1541, only nine or ten years after the bir th of John Clayton, Hernando de Soto started his expedition to explore t he interior of North America (what is now southeastern US) penetrati ng as far west as Oklahoma and discovering the Mississippi River.
