John Bedford's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 19th September 1780 when he married Mary Smith at Bow Brickhill in Buckinghamshire. Between 1782 and 1795 they went on to have six children together. The first two were baptised at Bow Brickhill, and the younger four children were baptised in the nearby parish of Simpson.

It is not clear when John died. There were burials of people called John Bedford at Simpson in October 1799 and April 1812, either or neither of which may be him.

Mary appears to have died in 1812, being buried at Simpson on 22nd February 1812.
