Barnard Bedford was baptised on 5th April 1795 at Simpson in Buckinghamshire, son of Mary Bedford, formerly Smith, and her husband John Bedford. Barnard's mother died in 1812, when Barnard was 16 years old. It is not clear when his father died.

No evidence has been found to suggest that Barnard married. He became a tailor. The 1841 census finds him living at Husborne Crawley in Bedfordshire. His sister Ann and two of her children were living in the same house, as was a ten year old apprentice tailor.

Barnard died in 1842, being buried at Husborne Crawley on 23rd June 1842. He was 47 years old.
