"John of Amelia, Major, served in the Revolution as aide to General Wayne, and distinguished himself at the storming of Stony Point; afterwards; aide to General Lawson, and was severely wounded in a fight with Tarleton's command near Charlottesville; justice, of Amelia. 1798"[2]
He married Elizabeth Eggleston, was the daughter of Joseph and Judith (Segar) Eggleston, married on 24 April 1788 at Amelia County, Virginia. John and his wife are also known by the Will of Elizabeth's father.
It has been said that John married several times. First to Elizabeth Burk(e), widow of Richard Townes and second to Ann Hall. This is a result of a confusion regarding the various John Archer of Amelia. Elizabeth Burk(e) married John Archer (1732- ), son of George Archer and Mary Bevill. Ann Hall married John Archer, son of William Archer ( -1750) and wife Ann.
