Johann Martin Clos was born 27 July 1833 to Martin Clos and Magdalena (Leonard) Clos in Bleiskastel, Bavaria (now part of Germany). When he was 20, he sailed from Le Havre, France with his parents and most of his siblings on the ship Harvest Queen and arrived in the United States on 12 Oct. 1853. They settled in Detroit, Michigan, where he married Theresia Paula Dietschin in 1860. They had five children, all born in Detroit. Theresia died on 26 April 1873, and is buried in Mt. Elliot Cemetary in Detroit. In 1878 Johann married Anna Maria Hanses, born in 1844 in Prussia, Germany. The date of Johann's death is unknown.
