Some researchers believe that the Joanna Hays that married Andrew Buchanan is Joanna Hays, the daughter of Patrick Hays and Frances McKnitt, but the will of David Hays (shown below), naming his daughter "Joanna Buchanan" appears to show her as David's likely daughter.

Another indicator of the likely parentage of Joanna is in evaluating the probable naming pattern of the children of Joanna and her husband, Andrew Buchanan. They DID have children named David and Jane, the did NOT have children named Patrick or Frances, which appears to support Joanna as the daughter of David Hays and his wife Jane.

More research may be necessary.

David Hays' will - - to wife, servant girl named Agness McGraw; to daughter Joanna Buchanan; to daughter, Eloner Paxton; to daughter, Hannah Sawyers; to daughter, Mary Lapsley; to sons, David, William, Joseph, Robert, John, division. Executors, wife Isabella Hays, William Paxton, James Sawyers. Teste: Andrew Kinnear, George Berry, Agness Kinnear. Proved 21st August, 1776, by solemn affirmation of the Kinnears. Isabella and Sawyers qualify. Paxton to be summoned. 19th August 1777, Paxton qualifies.
