Email from Jennifer Jackson Nov 2007: "During WWII, my dad joined the Army Air Force. For some reason, my grandmother didn't give any of her children middle names, and the miliary told the boys they needed a middle name. So - my dad changed his name on the spot from Woodrow Jackson to Jesse Woodrow Jackson.

"After the war, he came home to Texas and moved to Port Arthur, Texas with some of his Jackson cousins, to work in the petro-chemical plants there. My dad worked for Neches Butane. My dad's cousin Hosea was dating my mom's roommate at the time, and cousin and roommate set my parents up on a blind date. My parents were engaged a couple of months later, and married about six months later. As far as I can tell, it was the only impulsive thing either of them ever did.

"My mon was an English teacher, and she convinced my dad to go back to school on the GI Bill and get a degree. He got a bachelor's degree in agriculture and a master's in education. He worked as an ag teacher, then as a principal and superintendent at various times and places in Texas."

Died 2/1976 (Thursday) in the Cuero Community Hospital, Cuero, a few hours after being admitted as a patient. Services held (Sunday) at 3 p.m. in the Salty Community Church. Burial in Salty Cemetery. Rev. Clyde Poldrack of Gonzales officiated. (Following his service, funeral services were held at the same church for his cousin Louie Jackson.)

Jesse Jackson was BORN 7/23/1918 in Milam Co. to M/M. Jesse W. & Allie Pratt Jackson, Sr. Married Velma Self in Orange, TX. in 1946. He was a principal in the Smiley Public School System and was a former teacher in Thorndale's school. He served in the U.S. Army during WW-2.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Mrs. Velma Jackson of Smiley; son, Randall Wayne Jackson of Golden, CO.; 2 daughters, Jennifer Jackson of Austin, Debbie Jackson of Smiley; 2 brothers, Wayne Jackson of Austin, Norman Jackson of Dallas; sister, Mrs. Edward Griffin of Austin; mother, Mrs. Allie Pratt Jackson of Austin. SS Death Benefit on #457-24-2031.
