Published in The Austin American-Statesman Velma Lucille Self Jackson, 89, of Mabank, Texas, died Monday, December 22, 2008 in an Athens, Texas hospital. Mrs. Jackson was born in the Walnut Grove community near Bullard, Smith County, Texas on June 18, 1919 to Isaac Lafayette and Rebecca Caroline Cook Self. She married Jesse Woodrow Jackson on July 14, 1946 in Orange, Texas. Mrs. Jackson attended North Texas State Teacher's College and earned a BA in English in 1941. She received a M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from Sam Houston State Teacher's College in 1955, and pursued post-graduate study at The University of Houston. Mrs. Jackson devoted over 36 years of her life to educating the school children of Texas, both as an English teacher and a high school guidance counselor, primarily in East Texas and in the Houston area. Both she and her husband taught for several years at Thorndale High School in the mid-1950s. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, as well as Kappa Delta Pi. She held an honorary life membership in the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, and was also a Licensed Professional Counselor. She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Woodrow Jackson in 1976, her father Isaac Lafayette Self in 1932, her mother Rebecca Caroline Cook Self in 1974, two brothers Franklin Y Self in 1960 and Thomas Lafayette Self in 1967, and her sister Mittie Bell Self in 1918. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her three children, Randall Jackson of Thornton, Colorado; Jennifer Jackson of Mabank, Texas; and daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Phillip Hale of Gun Barrel City, Texas; four grandchildren, Jamie Jackson Huseas and husband Tom of Golden, Colorado; Sarah Teague of Euless, Texas; Brian Jackson of Bend, Oregon; and Lauren Witt of Gun Barrel City, Texas. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Anderson-Clayton Brothers Funeral Home in Kemp, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeview Assembly of God Church in Seven Points, Texas, with Rev. Don Bell officiating. Graveside services will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the Salty Community at Salty Cemetery, in central Texas, near Thorndale, with Rev. Clyde Poldrack officiating. References
