Jean Cromar was baptised on 7th May 1787 at Old Machar in Aberdeenshire, daughter of Jean Sutherland and her husband James Cromar, crofter. She had a twin sister called Helen. Her name was only given as Jean on her baptism record; on her marriages and most of the censuses she was called Janet, whilst in some censuses and at her death she was called Jessie which, being the more diminutive form, is probably how she was known.
On 17th October 1819, aged 32, Jessie married a sailor called John Preston in Aberdeen. Jessie and John appear to have had a daughter around 1821 and then a son in 1824 in Aberdeen.
No record of John’s death has been found, but he appears to have died sometime before 1832, when Jessie remarried.
On 16th February 1832, aged 44, Jessie married a merchant called John Leighton in Aberdeen. They appear in the 1841 census living at St Clement Street near the docks in Aberdeen, along with Jessie’s son.
John died sometime between 1841 and 1851, when Jessie was working as a bread seller and living alone at 42 St Clement Street. Ten years later, the 1861 census finds her in a very similar situation, living at 54 St Clement Street and working as a provision dealer.
In 1871 Jessie was described as a small shopkeeper, when she was living at 44 St Clement Street. At this time she had her four year old granddaughter living with her. They were still living together in 1881, but had left St Clement Street and moved to 13 Commerce Street, a short distance away. Jessie was no longer working by this time, being described as an annuitant. Her son James and his family formed a separate household in the same building.
Jessie died on 22nd July 1882 at home at 13 Commerce Street. She was 95 years old.
