Jean Sutherland’s origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 18th June 1786 when she married a farmer called James Cromar at Old Machar in Aberdeenshire, the parish centred on Old Aberdeen.

Jean and James went on to have twin girls the following year, whose baptism notes that the family lived at Foresterhill, which was a farm at that time surrounded by open fields about a mile and a half west of both Aberdeen and Old Aberdeen. In 1792 they had another daughter baptised at Old Machar.

Jean and James have yet to be traced after 1792.
