Janet lived at home until her father died. His obituary specifically mentions her as "the housekeeper". According to Isobel (Cleland) (Shiell) Inglis, she was a nurse. On the 1901 census, she was living with Isabella Cullen. Her sister Marion's obituary mentions that she was living in Manitoba at the time of Marion's death. It is likely that Janet made the trip west and was Marion's nurse. She undoubtedly returned to Ontario and relocated to Sarnia.. Her obituary in the Sarnia Canadian Observer states that she had been employed by the late J.J Broderick as a tailoress..indicating that Janet had a fairly broad range of marketable skills that she must have used to support herself. Her obituary also provided a clue to her Grandmother's name...by using the name Elizabeth Cullen as one of her survivors.
