- ↑ They were married by Rev. Ritchie and the announcement reads... ....James Shearer of Elma Twp to Janet Ballentine, late of Scotland.... The Ayr Ontario marriage location is fairly close to John Shearer in Bright, ON. It seems clear that Janet and Isabella came to this country to be with James...and that they married shortly after her arrival in Canada.Census records of 1871 indicate that she was unmarried. Ship passages for any of them have not been found, but it is interesting to note that the trunks used to bring their things from Scotland are still in use by family members.
