Ada Shearer's family tree mentions that James came to Canada in 1853 or 1854....According to his daughter Isabella's date and place of birth (in Scotland in Nov 1854), James cannot have come to Canada earlier than the spring of 1854. His father's death in the spring of 1853 may have been an impetus for the move or possibly have given James the financial resources to buy his ticket. James may also have been the conveyor of an inheritance for John and George who were already in Canada. It is likely that he had never seen his child until their arrival in Canada in 1857. James is found in the 1871 census index under James Shearor. He was a member of the Sons of Scotland.....described as...."a Canadian organization, the "Sons of Scotland" has branches throughout Canada, from Quebec to Vancouver Island. The Association carries on a benefits and insurance programme for the protection of members, their families and beneficiaries. It is a nonprofit group, organized in 1876 to develop amongst its members a spirit of mutual co- operation, friendship and assistance."
