Ina Waller and Nettie Ghettes by Michelle Magee

I had the pleasure of meeting two very lively sisters, Ina Waller and Nettie Ghettes are originally from a farm around Dawson, Minnesota. They came from a large family of fourteen. Unfortunately, the first half of the family were girls, so they were left to do all the chores. They took care of the plowing, milking, feeding and collecting of eggs.
They told me a story of a plow horse they used. They had never seen anything like it. No matter what, the horse would walk in a straight line. It never stepped on plants and you could almost let it go by itself. They, more or less, just sat there and held the reins.
The country school and closest neighbors were over a mile away. Who'd believe at one time there was all that open space to move around. No wonder they had such a large family, so the children had each other to play with.
I asked them if they argued much as children. Their answer was, "No," but as I asked other questions they didn't always agree with each other. I guess I didn't ask them if they argued much now.
I was fascinated with the way they kept meat and vegetables fresh over the summer. They had a cellar outside of the house. It was always cool enough to keep things from spoiling. They hung beef on hooks and put salt between slabs of pork. They canned vegetables in large quantities and kept them in the cellar also. A large garden was a must for a family of this size.
Now Ina and Nettie reside at Northridge in Ortonville, Minnesota, with all their wonderful memories of the past, just waiting to share them with others.
