He had 9 children with Laura: Lillian 1874-1874; Emma 1875-1875; Cora 1876-1877; Minnie May 1878-1880; Claude Lee 1880-1969; Clara 1881-1882; Olive Herman 1884-1893; Bada 1888-1888; and Philip Oswald 1891-. He had 2 children with Arletta: Alta C. and Ponc DeLeon.

 There is a J. M. Shanklin, age 29, in the 1870 census for Osage, Bates Co., Missouri. His [first?] wife is Jennie age 23 from Georgia, and they have a daughter Ella, age 2, born Missouri. {p.129}.
 I believe he may be the J. M. Shankland in the 1880 census for Barton City, Barton Co., Missouri.  J. M. is a farmer, age 39 from Kentucky (mother from Virginia, father not shown).  His wife Laura (Delphine Briggs?) is 23, born Illinois (parents Kentucky). The children are Ella, age 12, born Missouri and (unnamed), son, 2 months, born Missouri. {p.385d, NARA T9-0673}

 In the 1900 census for Liberty, Coffey Co., Kansas, there are listings for a Shankland family [cannot read on HeritageQuest and not indexed on Ancestry.com] with 5 members, head is listed with mother born Pennsylvania, next four with mother born Ohio [Laura, Ella, Claude, Phillip?], and [on next page] daughter Alta is 5 born July 1894; and son Leon is 2 born Mar 1898 -- both born Kansas, father Kentucky, mother Ohio. {ed 39, sh 18a, p. 97} His son Claud is living with his brother Sylvester in Missouri.
 In the 1910 census for Rich Hill, ward 1, Bates Co., Missouri, James Shankland is 70, born Kentucky (parents US), married twice, this marriage (20?) years, 'teamster - street'. His wife Arleta is 50, born US (parents same), married (twice?), with 2 of 2 children living. Son Phillip is 19, born Kansas, clerk grocery store; and daughter Alta is 14, born Kansas. {ed 16, sh 11a, p. 190} Their son Leon is living in Ottumwa, Coffey Co., Kansas, as 'hired man' age 12 born Kansas (father US, mother Kansas) with the family of Henry (Elmer?  In the 1920 census for Rich Hill, ward 2, Osage, Bates Co., Missouri, J. M. Shankland is 79, born Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Virginia), widowed; living with J. D. Hatfield 58 from Missouri (parents Kentucky) merchant in grocery; with wife Laura 55 born Nebraska (parents Missouri.) {ed 18, sh 9b, p. 189} He is next door to his son Claud.
