He served as a church messenger to the Dade County Baptist Association in 1889. James moved with his parents in Warren County, Kentucky about 1833. The 1840 census shows James living with his parents in Warren County, Kentucky. The 1850 census shows James living with his parents in 2nd District, Warren County, Kentucky. James and his family moved to Dade - Barton County, Missouri area in 1855. On May 20, 1858, Jacob Rector and his wife deeded 160 acres of land to James L Rector and Jacob P Rector in Section 26, Township 33, Range 29, Barton County, Missouri. This land was filed on February 9, 1867. The 1860 census shows James living with his wife in Johnson Township, Polk County, Missouri. His real estate was valued at $175.00. His personal property was valued at $1000.00. James married EMILY ELVIRA ETHERIDGE, the daughter of THOMAS ETHERIDGE and ELIZABETH KEMP, about 1862.
