James Pratt was baptised on 19th July 1801 at Willian in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Pratt, formerly Copps, and her husband John Pratt, a labourer. James appears to have been the eldest of eleven children.

On 24th January 1824, aged 22, James married Elizabeth Mabbott at Willian. She was from the neighbouring town of Baldock and they settled there after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1825 and 1844. The children's baptisms all record the family as having lived at either Norton End or Norton Street, on the north side of Baldock. Back in Willian, James's father died in 1826 and his mother died in 1839.

The 1841 census finds James, Elizabeth and their children living in Baldock.

The 1851 and 1861 censuses each find the family living at Norton End in Baldock. James worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Elizabeth was a straw plaiter. They also had two grandchildren living with them in 1861.

James died in 1862, aged 61. Elizabeth survived him by six years.
