Facts and Events
Name James R. Morrow
Gender Male
Birth? Abt 1794 South Carolina
Marriage to Cynthia _____
Death? 20 Nov 1835 York Co, SC

James R. Morrow was born in the mid 1790s to James and Tabitha Morrow of York County, South Carolina.[1]

York County documents in the 1820s address the affairs of Tabitha Morrow, widow of James Morrow and mother of James R. Morrow. After her husband’s death, guardianship of her minor children Jane Adelaide, Martha Caroline, and John D. Morrow was granted to Robert Clendon. Guardianship of John D. was later transferred to James R.

James is typically listed as dying 20 Nov 1835, without a source, which is consistent with his last appearance in York County records in January 1835 and his widow appearing in the 1840 census with no children under 5.

Children

On November 20, 1845, Cynthia Morrow, widow of James R. Morrow deceased, and his heirs at law Louisa Morrow, Jane Kidd wife of John Kidd, Esther Malinda Morrow, and James Morrow, sold 130 acres on Fishing Creek in York County that they inherited from James.[2]

Based on census records and family migration, his children are believed to be:

  • Esther Malinda b. abt 1820 (listed in the 1820 census, but as under 10 in 1830), listed in the record above, unmarried in 1845 and no further record.
  • James R. Morrow, born early 1820s, m. Nancy Riche; the James who appears in the above record and living near John, Thomas, and Jane in 1860.
  • Jane Morrow Kidd, born early 1820s [one of the young girls 5-9 in 1830], m. John, named in above record and living near John, Thomas, and James in 1860.
  • Louisa, b. about 1825 based on later census records, named in above record and living with Cynthia and John in 1860.
  • John T., b. early 1830s, too young to sign the record above, living with Cynthia and Louisa in 1860, near Thomas, James and Jane; DNA matches Thomas descendants.
  • Thomas A., b. early 1830s, too young to sign the record above, living near John, James, and Jane in 1860; DNA matches John descendants.
  • Daughter, b. early 1830s, under 10 in the 1840 census, and thus too young to sign record above, no further record.

DNA

MorrowDNA - Group 7 (SC/AL) ~ Tested Line ~ Early Ancestor: James R. Morrow of York, SC (this man) ~ Matches immigrant Hugh Morrow of Philadelphia
Tested sons:John T. Morrow and Thomas A. Morrow (info)

DNA testing demonstrates that John and Thomas are brothers, and that the child George in John's 1860 household is not a Morrow-born male.

References
  1. He is likely the 10-15 year old male in James' household in 1810 and he is under 26 in 1820. (This record is probably why he is typically listed as born 1794.) He could also be the child born before 1790 in their household, out the house in 1810 (as only 6 of their 7 children are in the household), but this is not consistent with the 1820 record.
