Biography of his grandson James (son of Richard) says that this James is the son of Richard ”an Englishman, who immigrated to America in early colonial times and settled in Maryland. Some of his children subsequently moved South and located in North Carolina. In that state were born James, the grandfather, and Richard, the father of our subject.”

Per web, first wife Sarah Grisham. Their marriage record is in Orange County for 14 Nov. 1803, witness Richard Thompson.
