James Jefferson McMillin was born on 14 Jul 1827 in Pennsylvania per most census records. His parents were married in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1820 and most of his siblings were born there. His parents may gave gone over to Beaver Co., PA for a time where he was born before moving back to Columbiana County, Ohio.

1860 US CENSUS, Pilot Grove Township, Hancock Co, ILL. Household #2988 James is age 31, born in PA, Occupation Laborer, "Elisa" is age 31 born in VA. All children born in Ohio: Altha is age 8, Lucina is age 7, Franklin is age 4, Angeline is age 4,Sarah is age 2.

1870 US CENSUS, Clayton Township, Crawford County, Wisc., Household #30. James and Eliza are incorrectly listed as age 66 and 62, (s/b age 43 and age 40.) James born in PA , Eliza born VA. Children: Lucina age 16, Franklin J. age 14, both born in Ohio. Sarah E. is age 12, Jesse is age 8, Alfreda is age 7; born Illinois. Mary E. is age 5, born Wisc.

The next household #31 is John and Susan Eihorn. With them are grandchildren Frank McMillen, age 8 <1862> and Minnie McMillen, age 6 <1864> Their father, Willard Frank McMillen, James' brother, is not found on the 1870 US census in Wisconsin.

1910 US CENSUS - Can't find James. Wife Eliza died in 1887, and he is not with any of his children.

Sept. 01, 1911, Death Record, Richland County, Wisconsin, Register #871. Name: James McMillan, Born July 14, 1827, Age 84 years, 2 months, 17 days. Widower born in Ohio. Father is listed as Henry McMillan born in Ohio, mother is unknown. Informant is his son Jesse McMIllan from Boaz, WI. Cause of death is listed as Valvular heart disease (mitrol) which had been present for several years. Burial: Felton Cemetery, Richland Center.

From the Republican Observer, Richland Center, Page 1, Sept. 7, 1911: James McMillan, one of the pioneer residents of Mill Creek, died Friday last at the age of eighty-four years. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Mill Creek Church, burial being made in the Felton Cemetery.
