Daughter Sarah, age 10, born Texas. Also in the household, Louisa Hickman, age 19, born Louisiana. They are living near AJ and Nancy Youngblood, Mary Ryan, Charles McKim, Major McKim, and other Hickmans.

He is listed as James McKim in the 1850 Polk County Slave Schedule as the owner of 3 slaves, female aged 27, male aged 3, male aged 1.

Listed in the 1860 Trinity County, Texas Census, Sumpter P.O., enumerated June 14th, page 7, Dwelling 42, Household 42 as James McNeally (sic), age 60, born KY. Sources say the McKim's came to Texas in the 1820s.

Listed in Marriage Book 6, page 405 for Natchitoches Parish, LA.

Note from bbp: James McKIM had the following heirs listed in Bk. A, pg. 200, Sabine Co., TX deed records: Major McKIM, John McKIM & Sarah Ann HICKMAN (wife of Asa HICKMAN).

From Houston Tracy, Jr: "Foreigner-Character Certificates in the General Land Office of Texas, edited by Gifford White, 1985. P. 132-No. 1446-James McKim [E] San Augustine 27 Sep 1834 James McKim, a native of Louisiana...has a family of 8 persons... (signed) John Bevil, Alcalde"

There is a J. McKim listed as head of the household in the 1810 Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana Census, page 214. Census conducted December 15, 1810. Within the household were: 1 male, 10-16; 2 males, 16-26; 1 male, 45+; 1 female, 10-16. Maybe James' father and siblings? There is also an Elizabeth McKimm, age 45+, with a male, age 16-26, in the same census for Rapides Parish.

There are records of two William McKims and a Mary McKim marrying in Nelson and Jefferson Counties, Kentucky, in the 1790s.

There is a James McKim (nephew?) listed in the Carroll Parish, Louisiana Mortality Schedule, age 34, died November, 1859 of Typhoid. Was a Carpenter, and originally from Pennsylvania.

Record of James McKim having land in Sabine County, Texas, Rusk County, Texas, and in Jasper County, Texas.

From "Early Settlers of Jasper County": "Another very early settler omitted from Smyth's list was James McKim, a native of Pennsylvania, who settled first in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. His home was at the northeast corner of our present Jasper County where three counties- Jasper, Newton, and Sabine- meet. McKim Creek bears witness today of his early residence there, and when the north boundary line was run for the original county, his home was so situated that it was used for one of the calls--'.... from Bear Creek in a direct line to McKim's.'

"This particular location might account for the fact that he was not counted in the earliest Mexican census, each enumerator thinking no doubt that he belonged in another's district. Date of his arrival in Texas is unknown, but it was after 1820, for in that same year his name appeared in the United States census for Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana (the James McKim listed in Natchitoches Parish doesn't appear to be our James, as the children listed in the household don't match. The James McKim listed in Rapides Parish most closely matches our James). He went to Houston County about 1840 and later lived in Polk and Trinity Counties...One still hears the names Wright, Pace, Watts, and Bevil in Jasper County, but Chesshur, McKim and Saul disappeared more than a century ago."

From the same article, about Thomas Byers Huling: "Some correspondence with James McKim, who was also a Pennsylvanian, is catalogued with the Huling papers, a voluminous collection in the University of Texas Archives, but it is not known whether the letters are business or personal."

T.B. Huling is listed in the 1835 Jasper County, Texas Census as Married, Merchant, age 30. Listed in a household with Samuel Ralph, Married, Watchmaker, age 42, and 1 Negro. He's also listed in the 1850 Rusk County, TX Census, page 228B, Dwelling 151, Household 152,with his family. Huling is also shown in the Jasper County, Texas 1850 Slave schedule as the owner of 17 slaves.

From Claiborne's History of Mississippi, 1820: James McKim served 3 years in the Illinois Regiment.

James McKim was the assignee for Mary Polly (Davis) Ryan, who is said to have been his sister-in-law. Polly's sister was Nancy (Davis) Youngblood. Is it possible that Davis family was the same one his granddaughter Marthie married into, and possibly the family of his first wife?

Nancy Ryan Youngblood and husband Andrew Jackson Youngblood are buried in the Damascus Cemetery in Polk County, Texas. Other Youngbloods, including Lina, are there as well.

Mary Ryan is listed in the 1850 Polk County, TX Census, living near James, age 50, widow, born KY, with Winnie Ryan, age 20, born LA. Next door is John Ryan, 22, born LA, with wife Louisa, age 30, born LA, and Laura McDavies, age 5, born LA; Ann McDavies, age 6/12, born TX.

"Thomas McKim Second Son of Sir John McKim

"Thomas McKim arrived by ship in America October 3, 1734. After being somewhat successful as a merchant in Londonderry, he decided to settle in Philadelphia and go into business. It was not long before Thomas gained a margin of success, and his business flourished. It seemed life in America became meaningful, and it continued to get better and better. At the age of 29 Thomas met a widow lady, whose name was Agnes (McMahon) McMorry. Agnes was 5 years older than Thomas, and had a daughter whose name was Janet McMahon. The relationship blossomed, and on April 3, 1739 in Philadelphia they married. Shortly thereafter Thomas and Agnes with stepdaughter Janet McMahon took all their possesions and started anew in Newcastle County, Delaware on the Brandywine River.

"Judge Thomas McKim of Newcastle County

"Thomas McKim was commissioned by the Governor of Delaware, Lieutenant of Militia in the Upper Regiment from Brandywine, in 1756. Thomas McKim was also appointed as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, New Castle, Delaware in the year 1774. Thomas did find a new life in America, contributing a great deal to the community, and he gained great recognition in his endeavors. His greatest achievement was in the enrichment he gave within his own family. Thomas and Agnes in the year 1770 were baptized and received communion in the Baptist London Tract Church of Kent County. Thomas and Agnes together had five more children, all born in the home of the Brandywine River. Thomas spent all his years on the Brandwine River home, until his death on September 16, 1784 at his age of 74.

"Children of Thomas and Agnes McKim: Jane McKim Born 01/25/1740 John McKim Born 02/05/1742 Robert McKim Born 04/20/1746 Alexander McKim Born 1748 Elizabeth McKim Born 1750"

There is a James McKim born April 15, 1793 in Loudoun, Virginia.

Record of an A. McKim with land surveyed in the name of MEP & P RR Co. in Wise County, Texas.

Could James McKim, Sr. be the son or nephew of Robert McKim who was married in Louisiana?

From Houston Tracy, Jr.: "Catholic Marriage Record Reference: Natchitoches [Spanish Louisiana Province], 1729-1803, Vol. 2, by Elizabeth Shown Mills, 1977. P. 136 - Marriage Register 2, Entry No. 1068. Original text in Spanish. Transcription to English by the author. Roberto MECHIM [McKIM], native of Baltimore, Province of Pennsylvania, legitimate son of Guillermo MECHIM [William McKIM] and Maria DEVER [Marie or Mary DEAVER or DEAVERS] to marry Francisca CASTEL [Francoise or Frances CASTILLE], native of New Orleans, legitimate daughter of Gregerio and Cecilia CASTEL [Gregory and Cecile CASTILLE]. 19 May 1783. Witnesses: Luis FORTIN, Antonio LeFEVRE, Pedro BROODY, Francisco La MAISTRE.

"Civil Marriage Contract Reference: Microfilm of the original records: Colonial Records of St. Landry [Parish, Spanish Louisiana Province] Arranged chronologically. Robert McKIM and the widow Francoise, formerly the wife of Vincente BISSAINTE, an Appalache Indian and authorized by the widow, Cecille VARANGUE, her natural mother, appeared before Etienne Marafret LAYSSARD, Comandante at the Post of Rapide 13 Feb 1780 to take one another in marriage. Groom represented by le Sieurs Vincent PORIER and Vincent PORIER fils [Jr. or son of], father and son. Bride represented by her brother in-law, Louis LaPRAIRIE, William O'NEAL and Adam HOFFMAN.

"Other McKIM men found in early Louisiana records: James McKIM, who settled some land with Robert and was still living in 1821 with his son, James McKIM Jr. nearby. One or both of these James' settled in Tejas [Sabine County, Texas] by 1835.

"Lyman S. DRAPER showed in his notes that a Thomas McKIM, with Simon BURNEY came from North Carolina. And intermittently refers to Thomas as James, having served in the Illinois Regiments for 3 years under Gen. George Rogers CLARK and at Cahokia & St. Louis. Robert McKIM at Handsburg [KY] in the late 1770's. James McKIM and Simon BURNEY took an Oath of Allegiance to the King of Spain at Fort Natchz in 1786.

"Would like to locate records on the McKIM family in Maryland or Pennsylvania. Some persons contend that the name is sometimes MECOM."

"James and Elizabeth Hickman McKim had 5 children that I am aware of: Major, John, Jane, Phoebe, and Robert.

"A lot has been written in the different forums about Major McKim. I did find him and his brother John in the 1870 Harris County Census, but I haven't traced him any further.

"John McKim married Sarah Jane Worden. Her last name is possibly from her first marriage.

"Jane McKim married a WESTOVER and she is shown living close to Major on the 1850 Polk County, Texas census as a widow with several children.--She's listed next door to Major, and next door to a couple of Hickman families...Jane Westover, widow, age 28, born LA; Rosanna, age 10, born TX; Emmeline, age 7, born TX; Isabella, age 3, born TX.

Phoebe McKim married James Moore in Polk County, Texas on November 7, 1848. Their son Jesse, married Frances Elizabeth Hickman, daughter of Asa and Sarah Ann McKim Hickman, but that is a totally other story.

"Robert McKim married Sarah Dameral and probably lived in Liberty County, Texas where he had a bounty land grant.

"Sarah Ann McKim Hickman was the daughter of William McKim and Delilah Daily. She was my great-great-grandmother."

There is record of a James McKim in the 1790 Census for Washington, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. I think it says there are 2 free white males 16 & up including head of household, 2 free white males under 16, and 4 free white females. No slaves. They are living near a couple of Curry families and a Moore family. Maybe a relation?

In Henrico County, Virginia, John McKim married Elizabeth Graves on 8/27/1788, William McKim married Betsey Elliott on 12/26/1793, and Andrew McKim married Sarah Roper on 10/9/1800.

There are records of a James McKim, Captain in the 3rd Brigade Mounted Militia for Sabine County, at least from July 9, 1839 to August 10, 1839. I believe this is a pay stub for the Republic of Texas Militia.

There are records of a John McKim receiving a Bounty Land Grant in Texas for service between 1835 and 1846. Not sure who he is.

There are records of a John McKim, age 42 and his family, and William McKim, age 39 and his family living next door to John, in the 1860 Town of Liberty, Liberty County, Texas Census, page 8, Dwellings 60 &61, Families 63 &64. Maybe cousins? Wife and kids don't match up with our William, and this John is much older than ours. Both are from Pennsylvania.

There are records of a James Mecham marrying a Ruth Ann Crest in Anderson County, TX, 10/26/1849.

Posted on the Internet: "The McKIM name is Scottish. They are part of the Fraser clan located around Loch Ness. McKIM is from the Gaelic McShimidh which means son of Simon. Each succeeding Lord Fraser of Lovat is styled McShimidh probably from the Simon Fraser killed in 1333 at Halidon Hill. In 1506 Ewin Makkymmie and John Makkymmie were each granted half of Lepinquhillin in Bute.

"There are two lines of McKIM in the US. One that came from Scotland directly and another that came from Ireland but who were Scot/Irish. There are also McKIMS in Australia. They were from the Highlands of Scotland."
