Sources say the McKim's came to Texas in the 1820s, and from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1734 (But they are of Scottish descent). Marriage date and place comes from grandson Charles McKim. Moved to Polk County about 1843. Charles and brother William McKim are listed in the Beat 3 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade Texas Militia under the command of C. Holshousen. James McKim (Sr. or Jr.?) is the Captain of another Militia unit. They were also under the command of B.P. Hardin, names listed as McKimm. There is a John McKimm listed in the same unit, Beat 10, under the command of J.H. Griffin July 26, 1843. John McKim also made a Republic of Texas pension claim. Listed in the 1850 Polk County, Texas Census. Census conducted November 18, 1850. Page 22, Dwelling 169, Household 169. Charles McKim, age 35, born Louisiana. Listed with wife Nancy McKim, age 26, Louisiana; son Stephen McKim, age 10, Texas; daughter Elizabeth McKim, age 8, Texas; son Asa McKim, age 7, Texas; daughter Penelopy, age 5, Texas; daughter Deliah (sic), age 3, Texas; daughter Nancy, age 1/2, Texas. Page 189A. (next to the Daileys) Listed in the 1860 Trinity County, Texas Census, page 67, dwelling 414, family 413. Listed as Charles McKim, age 42, Farmer, born Louisiana. Wife Nancy, age 36, born Louisiana. Children: Steven, age 21; Aley (sic), male, age 18; Penelopy, age 16; Mary, age 12; Pelina, female, age 11; Ann, age 9; Nancy, age 7; Mical (sic), age 4; Andrew J., age 2. All children born in Texas. There are land records for Charles McKim in Newton County, Texas, dated November 20, 1849 for 1476.13 acres, Certificate #646, and again in Polk County, Texas, dated November 28, 1859 for 320 acres, Certificate #29. Also land records for Charles McKim in Hays County, Texas. From the Newton County Genealogical Society: "Charles McKIM, military record Sergeant of Capt. Joseph A. Tullos, Co. A, 13 Bat., Texas cavalry. Born in Nacatoches Parish, La. age 45 (Note from Bonnie: Can’t find a date to figure this from.); 5’8”, dark com. blue eyes, farmer. Mustered at Camp Burnett at Crockett, enlisted at Sumpter (35 mi from Crockett) 3/1/1862. -- $17.00 per Mo. Orig. Sig. on receipt 'Charles McKIMM.' His wife died 7/16/1862, (substituted for another draftee) 'for 3 years of the war' as Pvt. Co. E, Elmore’s --. 20 Tex. Inf. (It was customary for a conscript to have another take his place). He was in hospital at Virginia Point, Galveston, 11/21/1863. This enlistment in same outfit with Major. Last entry: 'Guarding R.R. bridge, 5/18/1865'. There is also a Charles McKim who served with Major in E Co., 20 Texas Infantry as a Private. (There's more to this but this is the main information part. He then goes on to speculate that Charles & William were related to James.)" |
