James Hobbs was baptised on 5th August 1792 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Elizabeth Hobbs, formerly Cook, and her husband John Hobbs. The family lived at Ballingdon, which was actually a detached part of the parish of Whipsnade at the time, but on the borders with the neighbouring parishes of Great Gaddesden and Flamstead.

James's father died in 1810.

On 2nd October 1814, aged 22, James married Rebecca Goodwin at Whipsnade. She was sixteen and originally from the suburbs of London. After their marriage they settled in Flamstead, where they had nine children baptised between 1815 and 1840. James's mother died in 1815.

The 1841 census finds James, Rebecca and some of their children living at Roe End Lane in the rural area north-west of Flamstead. James was described as an agricultural labourer. They also had a baby grandson, James, living with them, who was their son Jonas's son. Jonas's wife, Amelia Ginger, had died the previous month shortly after giving birth, and it seems that Rebecca and James brought up their grandson. Baby James was only a few months younger than Rebecca and James's own youngest son.

The 1851 census finds Rebecca and James living at Black Slough in Flamstead, which is the name of one of the cottages on Roe End Lane. They had their two youngest sons and their grandson James (described as a son) living with them, as well as Rebecca's niece, Susannah Lee.

Rebecca died in 1853, aged 55.

The 1861 census finds James living alone in Flamstead. He died in 1862, aged 69.
