Thomas Hobbs was baptised on 11th April 1779 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Elizabeth Hobbs, formerly Cook, and her husband John Hobbs. The family lived at Ballingdon, which was actually a detached part of the parish of Whipsnade at the time, but on the borders with the neighbouring parishes of Great Gaddesden and Flamstead.

On 9th August 1803, aged 24, Thomas married Judith Palmer at Flamstead. They went on to have five children baptised at Flamstead between 1805 and 1819, although one died young.

Thomas's father died in 1810 and his mother died in 1815.

Thomas and Judith's eldest son died as a young man in 1830.

The 1841 census finds Thomas and Judith living on Roe End Lane in Flamstead, in the rural area north-west of the village itself.

Judith died in 1845, aged 66.

Thomas moved in with his daughter Sarah and her husband, who lived in the nearby village of Markyate (then often called Market Street or Markyate Street), which straddled the parishes of Flamstead, Caddington and Studham at the time. The 1851 census finds Thomas living with them in the Flamstead part of Markyate, whilst in 1861 they were living together in the Caddington part of Markyate.

Thomas died in 1866, aged about 87. He was buried at Flamstead on 2nd April 1866.
