Joseph Hobbs was baptised on 17th July 1788 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Hobbs, formerly Cook, and her husband John Hobbs. The family lived at Ballingdon, which was actually a detached part of the parish of Whipsnade at the time, but on the borders with the neighbouring parishes of Great Gaddesden and Flamstead.
Joseph's father died in 1810 and his mother died in 1815.
On 13th July 1817, aged about 29, Joseph married Sarah Harper at Whipsnade. They had three children baptised at Flamstead between 1818 and 1824.
By 1841 Joseph and Sarah had moved to the London area. The census that year finds them living with their children on Augustus Street in St Pancras, with Joseph working as a brewer. The 1851 census finds Joseph, Sarah and a lodger living at 49 Augustus Street, with Joseph working as a servant, whilst Sarah was a laundress.
Joseph and Sarah later left London and returned to Hertfordshire, settling in Hemel Hempstead, not far from Flamstead where they had previously lived.
Joseph died aged 67, being buried at Boxmoor in Hemel Hempstead on 21st October 1855. Sarah survived him by twelve years.
