Rebecca Goodwin was born on 10th February 1798 on St John Street in the parish of Clerkenwell, Middlesex, just outside the City of London, and baptised at Clerkenwell the following month. She was the daughter of John and Mary Goodwin.
On 2nd October 1814, aged 16, she married an agricultural labourer called James Hobbs at Whipsnade in Bedfordshire, some thirty miles north-west of London. After their marriage they settled in the nearby parish of Flamstead, where they had nine children baptised between 1815 and 1840.
The 1841 census finds Rebecca, James and some of their children living at Roe End Lane in the rural area north-west of Flamstead. They also had a baby grandson, James, living with them, who was their son Jonas's son. Jonas's wife, Amelia Ginger, had died the previous month shortly after giving birth, and it seems that Rebecca and James brought up their grandson. Baby James was only a few months younger than Rebecca and James's own youngest son.
The 1851 census finds Rebecca and James living at Black Slough in Flamstead, which is the name of one of the cottages on Roe End Lane. They had their two youngest sons and their grandson James (described as a son) living with them. They also had a niece called Susannah Lee living with them, who was the daughter of Rebecca's sister Elizabeth (who had married James Lee in London in 1818 but then also moved out to Flamstead).
Rebecca died in 1853, aged 55. James survived her by about nine years.
