Personal History

James Hamilton,[2] styled Viscount Hamilton, was born 24 August 1838[4] at Brighton, co. Sussex, England[1] (registered in the district of Brighton).[2]

James entered Harrow School in 1852 and left in 1855.[11]

On 28 May 1857,[9] James, Viscount Hamilton, matriculated from Christ Church, Oxford, then aged 18. He earned the Bachelor of Arts in 1860 and the Master of Arts in 1865.

On 15 June 1866,[7] James was appointed by the Prince of Wales to be a Lord of the Bedchamber to His Royal Highness, until about 1885.

After his father was created a duke in 1868, James was styled Marquess of Hamilton.

On 15 June 1885,[6] James was appointed by Queen Victoria to be a Companion of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (CB).

Upon the death of his father in 1885, James succeeded as Duke of Abercorn and Marquess of Hamilton of Strabane (2nd, created 1868), Viscount Strabane (6th, 1701), Lord Hamilton, Baron of Strabane (10th, 1617), and Baron of Mountcastle, co. Tyrone (6th, 1701), in Ireland; Marquess of Abercorn (3rd, 1790) and Viscount Hamilton (4th, 1786), in Great Britain; and Earl of Abercorn (11th, 1606), Lord Paisley (11th, 1587), Lord Abercorn (11th, 1603), and Lord Paisley, Hamilton, Mountcastell, and Kilpatrick (11th, 1606), in Scotland.

On 1 January 1886,[8] the Duke of Abercorn was appointed by the Prince of Wales to be Groom of the Stole to His Royal Highness.

James Hamilton and Mary Anna Curzon were married 7 January 1869 at the Church of St George, Hanover Square, co. Middlesex, England.

Death and Probate

The Duke of Abercorn died 3 January 1913[4][5] at Hampden House, Middlesex, England[5] (registered in the district of St George Hanover Square),[3] and was buried 7 January 1913[10] in the Baronscourt Parish Church graveyard, co. Tyrone, (Northern) Ireland.[4][10]

On 26 June 1913,[5] in London, administration was granted to his brother the Rt. Hon. Lord George Francis Hamilton GCSI; effects were in the amount of £363,789 6s.

The Duke's titles were inherited by his first son, James Albert Edward.
