Facts and Events
James was a farmer most of his life. He then travelled via Panama to the gold fields of California where he arrived in the summer of 1853. In the fall of 1859, James travelled from Nevada Co., CA, to Linn Co., OR. The following notice appeared in the Heppner Gazette, 7 January, 1892: "NOTICE OF INTENTION Land Office at The Dalles, Or., Dec. 29, 1891. Notice is hereby given that the following named settler has filed notice of his intintion [sic] to make final proof in support of his claim, and that said proof will be made before F. H. Snow, U.S. Commissioner, at Lexington, Oregon, on February 16, 1892, viz: JAMES GALLOWAY. Hd. No. 2901, for the NW, SE, W, XE, and NE, NW, dec 25, tr 18, R 24, KW. He names the follow witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon and cultivation of said land vis: David H. Grabill, A.T. King, S.P. Haney and Benjamin F. King, all of Ione, Morrow Co., Or. John W. Lewis, Register." As he grew older, James lived close to his middle daughter, Margaret Esther Stoutenburg, and her family, but shortly before his death, he returned to Eastern Oregon, where he stayed with his eldest daughter, Mary Fransis Kees. He was buried in Umatilla County of Eastern Oregon; his obituary appeared both in the Yamhill County newspaper (where his daughter Esther lived) and the Umatilla County newspaper. The following notice appeared in the Heppner Gazette, 23 October, 1896: "Died--Near Ione [Oregon], yesterday, of pneumonia, Mr. Galloway, father-in-law of J.M. Kees. Deceased had been ill for several days." Obituary: "DIED October 22, 1896, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. M. Kees, near Ione, Morrow County, Oregon, James Galloway, aged 67 years and 7 days. Deceased was a former resident of Yamhill County, and many residents of this county will remember his generous deeds and kind hospitality. He was a kind and loving father and an honest, upright citizen. He had been a member of the Christian church for over 47 years. Mr. Galloway was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, October 15th, 1829. He was married to Lucinda Lowe, December 20th, 1849, who died in April 1852, leaving him with two small children. He came west to the gold fields of California in the summer of 1853. On October 1857, he was united in marriage with Harriet Schooling. In the fall of 1859 he and his family came to Oregon, settling in Linn County, where, in March 1864, his beloved companion was laid to rest, leaving him with three small children, who survive him as follows: Mrs. J.M. Kees, of Ione, Oregon, Mrs. D. Stoutenburg, and Mrs. J. Versteeg, of Wheatland. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.L. Swift, after which the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives." References
