In the fall of 1859, James & his new wife and daughter travelled from Nevada Co., CA, to Linn Co., OR. Descendants of his Oregon family recall that after the death of his second wife in 1864 (while the children were still very young), his three children were sent to live with nearby families. Once the girls were older he took them back to his home until they married.

James and Harriet had three daughters: Marion Fransis (1859-1927, married Jacob M. Kees), Margaret Esther (1861-1932, married Dingeman D. Stoutenburg), and Lucinda Jane (1863-1934, married Jacob A. Versteeg).
