James Downing 79, of Robin Road in Princeton, died at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Crittenden County Hospital, in Marion, Ky., after suffering a brief illness.

Born April 16, 1919, in Hopkins County, Ky., he was the son of the late Ernest Downing and Esther Gipson Downing.

He was a retired truck driver who last worked for the Arnold Ligon trucking Company in Madisonville, Ky., was a World War II veteran, was a member of thee Jewish Faiht, and had attended the Unity Baptist Church in Fedonia, Ky.

He was preceded in death by one son and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Driver Downing of Princeton, one daughter, Patrica Duncan of Madisonville; three step-daughters, Carolyn Flick, Donnna White, and Betty Gray, all of Fredonia; and two foster daughters, Lisa Strack of Eddieville, Ky., and Joyce Fitzgerald of Princeton; two foster sons, Wayne Byarly, and Jerry Byarly, both of Princeton; three brothers, Jewell Downing of Madisonville, Ralph Downing of Boonville, Ind., abd Eark Downing of Morganfield, Ky.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton, with the Rev. Carl Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. No Saturday visitation times were announced.
