[edit] About Erman Ralph (Rabbit) DowningRalph's Uncle Walter Gipson gave him the name of "Rabbit", when he was 14, because he loved to play baseball. He said he was like Rabbit Rogers, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Name stuck with him the rest of his life. He was also called "Valday" by his brothers. His older brother was call "Boy-be" because the little brothers could not say brother and that was what Jewel call James till he died. Jewel was call "Dude", and Earl was called "Pete-Eye" Ralph (Rabbit) was one great man he always saw the good in people, and was a kind loving father, husband, brother, and brother-in-law. He was born in Madisonville, Ky. He moved to Boonville in 1959. He retired from Peabody Coal Lynnville Mine after 42 1/2 years in the coal mines. He was a member of the UMWA District 11 Local 9926. He was a U.S. Army veteran during World war II and was a member of the VFW Post 3418. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 200 and the 40 &8 Voiture 471, the Richland Masonic Lodge 702 F &AM and the Evansville Scottish Rite. He was a charter and lifetime member of the Poorman's Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavonia I. "Skeet" Downing, in 1998. He is survived by four sons, Ralph Wayne Downing and Bradley Downing both of Boonville, Mike Downing of Lynnville, Ind., and Larry Downing of Paducah, Ky.; one brother, Earl "Pete I" Downing of Morganfield, Ky.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Koehler Funeral home, Boonville Chapel, Burial will be in Malple Grove Cemetery with military rites by Warrick County Veterans Memorial Services. Masonic Memorial services will be held 6:30 p.m. and a 40 & 8 memorial service will be held 7 p.m. today at the Koehler Funeral Home, Boonville Chapel.
