Born in Sawley, near Ripon, in 1875, James followed his father's footsteps to become a gamekeeper, finding employment at St Ives Estate in West Yorkshire.

He married Elizabeth Mylrea at the age of 21 on Thursday 18 June 1896 in St Michael's Church, Grimsargh, Preston, Lancashire. The wedding was witnessed by William Bretherton and Mary Ann Mylrea.

Elizabeth and James lived and worked at St Ives Estate, living for much of the time in lodgings in the coach house above the stables, where they raised 7 children - three sons and four daughters.
