Mary Ann Clark was born in 1848 in Colsterdale, near Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire.

She married John Cundall, a gamekeeper, in 1869 in Leyburn Registration District. They had twelve children together, nine daughters and three sons.
