Elizabeth was born in Askam in Furness, Lancashire, to parents Thomas and Eliza Mylrea, both from the Isle of Man. She was the second daughter of six children, three daughters and three sons. Elizabeth married James Cundall, a gamekeeper, on Thursday 18 June 1896 in St Michael's Church, Grimsargh, Preston, Lancashire. The wedding was witnessed by William Bretherton and Mary Ann Mylrea. Elizabeth and James lived and worked at St Ives Estate near Bingley, West Yorkshire, living for much of the time in lodgings in the coach house above the stables, where they raised 7 children - three sons and four daughters. Anecdote: When Elizabeth's son Walter was away at war, Elizabeth told her family of a bad dream she'd had of Walter climbing through barbed wire. According to her daughter Beatrice, when te telegram came with news of Walter's death they noted he'd been killed the very same night of the dream.
