Thomas Mylrea was born on the Isle of Man in 1844. He married Eliza, also from Isle of Man, and they had six children, three daughters and three sons. After the births of their first three children, somewhere between 1872 and 1875, census data indicates they moved from Isle of Man to Lancashire, England. The 1881 England Census has them living at Steel St, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire with their six children aged newborn to fifteen years. In 1881 Thomas held the profession of an iron miner.
