According to a 1955 letter from Wm. Handley Gaddie of Pineville, KY, his parents J. Pelly and Mollie Gaddie moved from Campbellsville, KY to Barborville, in the mountains of southeast KY, in 1892. According to the 1955 letter from Wm. Handley Gaddie to Trudy Rhoton, J. Pelly and Mollie Gaddie had only three children. Henry S. Robinson claimed in a 1955 letter to Trudy Rhoton that he and J. Pelly were "great friends". The 1880 US Census listed Jabez' occupation as "Miller".
