Conflicting information in the Rhoton to Abshier letter of March 2003 set his place of birth at Green County Kentucky, and at Bedford County Virginia. Virginia seems the more logical choice.

According to the Rhoton to Abshier letter and information of March 2003, Bats Gaddie was located in the 1850 census for Taylor County, Kentucky on page 140, #166. 1860 Census records for Taylor County, Kentucky, page 553, #280. He is listed as a farmer, and he had eight children listed with him and his wife, Sarah. Bartholomew and Sarah had 11 children in all, one of whom died as a child (Robert Penn Gaddie). He was purportedly a farmer, slaveholder, and also traded in horses.

According to the March 2003 Rhoton to Abshier letter, Bats is buried in the Gaddie Cemetery on Hwy 210 in Nelson County, Kentucky.
