Childhood
Isabella Westmorland Hutchinson was born on 17th January 1869 in the parish of Jarrow in County Durham, daughter of Jane Hutchinson, formerly Cooper, and her husband William Hutchinson, a paper mill labourer. Isabella's unusual middle name appears to have been given in honour of her mother's brother-in-law, Robert Westmorland, who was married to Jane's half-sister Ann Bradshaw. Robert and Ann had had three children by the time of Isabella's birth, all of whom had died young. Robert himself died a few months after Isabella's birth.
Around the time of Isabella's birth her family appears to have lived near the Monkton Paper Mill (also known as Springwell Paper Mills) in the township of Monkton to the south of Jarrow; in one census Isabella gave her place of birth as 'Springwell', whilst the family was living near the paper mills in Monkton in the 1871 census.
In the early 1870s the family left Jarrow and moved about five miles to the south to South Hylton in the parish of Ford, to the west of Sunderland.[10] Isabella's mother Jane was originally from South Hylton.
Adulthood
By 1891 Isabella had left home and was working as a domestic servant in Sunderland.
On 1st September 1894, aged 25, Isabella married James Cran Neel Robson, who worked as a painter and decorator. He was a widower, with his first wife having died in 1891 aged 19 after only one year of marriage. Isabella and James were married at the Venerable Bede church in the Monkwearmouth area of Sunderland. They had five sons together between 1895 and 1905. Back in South Hylton, Isabella's father died in 1898.
The 1901 census finds Isabella, James and their first two sons living in two rooms at 65 Bell Street. By 1911 they were living in three rooms at 25 Marlborough Street with their five sons. Back in South Hylton, Isabella's mother died in 1913.
The First World War would have a profound effect on the family. Isabella's two eldest sons both joined up. James joined the Durham Light Infantry, whilst William joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. Both were killed in action. James was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, aged 21. William died two years later in Belgium.
In 1923, Isabella's husband James died, aged 55. The family's address at this time was 10 Maple Street, where Isabella would live for the rest of her life.
Over the next nine years, all three of Isabella's surviving sons married: John later in 1923, then Watson in 1926 (both of whom married in Sunderland), and Henry in 1931 in Edinburgh. Isabella appears to have had at least three granddaughters born in her lifetime.
Isabella died in 1932, aged 63. She was buried at the Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland on 17th September 1932.

- ↑ Ford had been a township in the ancient parish of Bishopwearmouth. Ford was one of the parts of Bishopwearmouth parish not within the borough of Sunderland, and in 1866 Ford was made a parish in its own right. Despite the name of the parish, the main settlement in Ford by this time was South Hylton.
