Facts and Events
James Thorburn Robson was born in 1895 at Sunderland in County Durham, son of Isabella Westmorland Robson, formerly Hutchinson, and her husband James Cran Neil Robson, a painter and decorator. James was the eldest of the couple's five sons. His unusual middle name was his great grandmother's maiden name, and had been used by several members of the family as a middle name. James appears in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Sunderland. By 1911, he was working as an apprentice plater in Sunderland's shipbuilding industry.
When the First World War broke out, James was about nineteen years old. He became a soldier, joining the Durham Light Infantry. In 1916 he was at the Battle of the Somme in northern France. He was killed there on 18th September 1916, aged just 21. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
