Elizabeth Hutchinson was baptised on 3rd July 1864 at Bishopwearmouth in the borough of Sunderland, County Durham. She was the daughter of Jane Hutchinson, formerly Cooper, and her husband William Hutchinson, a paper mill labourer. Shortly after Elizabeth's birth the family left Sunderland and moved to the nearby village of South Hylton, where her sister Hannah was born in 1866, before moving again to Jarrow by 1869, where they lived near the Monkton Paper Mills. Elizabeth appears there in the 1871 census with her parents and siblings.
Elizabeth's parents returned to South Hylton in the early 1870s. By 1881, Elizabeth had left home and was working as a domestic servant for a widow in Sunderland. The 1891 census finds her still working as a servant in Sunderland, for the manager of a steam ship company.
In 1892 Elizabeth married Thomas William Clark, who worked in the ship building industry. They appear to have had eight children together, although only six were still reported to be living in 1911. Their first couple of children were born at South Hylton. They then moved to Southwick, where they appear in the 1901 census, before returning to South Hylton by the time of the 1911 census, which finds the family of eight people living in two rooms at 16 Wear Street.
Thomas died in 1922.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Elizabeth was living with her daughter's family at 5 Buttenshaw Terrace in the Penshaw area of Houghton le Spring.
Elizabeth appears to have died in 1943, aged 79.
