Jane Ann Hutchinson was baptised on 9th November 1862 at Bishopwearmouth in the town of Sunderland, County Durham. She was the daughter of Jane Hutchinson, formerly Cooper, and her husband William Hutchinson, a paper mill labourer. She was the couple's second child, but the eldest who survived infancy. In the mid 1860s the family moved out of Sunderland to the village of South Hylton a little way to the west, which is where Jane's mother was from. They moved again before 1869 to Jarrow, where they lived near the Monkton Paper Mills, appearing there in the 1871 census. The family later returned to South Hylton in the early 1870s, where Jane appears to have lived the rest of her life.

By 1881, Jane had left home and was working as a general servant for a John Surtees at 7 Union Street in South Hylton. By 1891 Jane had returned to live with her parents, although she was still working as a domestic servant.

Jane never married. She died at the age of 33 in 1896, and was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery on 21st June 1896.
