Thomas William Clark was born on 16th April 1861 at South Hylton in the parish of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham, son of Eleanor Clark, formerly Talbot, and her husband William Clark, a shipwright. The 1871 census finds the family still living at South Hylton (which had become part of the newly-created parish of Ford in 1866). By 1881, Thomas was working as a furnace man at a forge, and living with his parents at Offerton Lane in South Hylton.
In 1882, Thomas had a son with a woman named Elizabeth Pattison. The boy being illegitimate his birth was registered as George William Pattison but he was baptised as George William Clark, with Thomas named as the father on the baptism record. Thomas and Elizabeth married later that year.
In 1890, Elizabeth died, aged 28. Thomas appears in the 1891 census living back with his parents in South Hylton.
Two year later, Thomas married again. His second wife was Elizabeth Hutchinson, and they went on to have another seven children together. Their first couple of children were born at South Hylton, after which they moved to Southwick, where the 1901 census finds them living at 25 Lilburn Place, with Thomas working as a ship yard labourer. By 1911 they had returned to South Hylton, where the family of eight people lived in two rooms at 16 Wear Street.
Thomas died in 1922, aged 60. He was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery on 11th March 1922. Elizabeth survived him by over twenty years.
