Facts and Events
From Alf Dagfin Haukeli [email protected]: Ingeborg Karoline and Anne were cousins of Lars Haukeli (my grandfather). They were respectively 22 and 24 years older than he was, and I have never heard my grandfather telling of his family in USA. Probably because he did not know of them (they emigrated 6 years before he was born). Ingeborg Caroline Christenson was born to poor farmers in Norway. She was orphaned and came to America with her uncle Anders Halvorson and sister Anne in 1882. Kåsa (the ring above the a means that it's pronounced something like the American a in 'war') isn't actually a farm, rather it's a cotter's place under the farm Haukelien. Caroline Christenson was only 57 when she died of stomach cancer in 1919, but her poor health had aged her beyond her years. One of her last wishes was to see her son, Harry, who was on his way home from serving on the Russian front in World War I. While lying on her deathbed, Caroline called for him. her younger son, Chris, who bore a striking resemblance to Harry, entered the room. Onlookers said they thought Caroline believed he was Harry returning home from the war. Sadly, she died before Harry actually arrived.
