Johan (John) Christenson was born in the parish of Bamle, County Telemark, Norway. His father was a ferryman and drowned when he was a baby. He came to American when he was 18 on a cattle boat that landed in New York.

1910 Census indicates home at 326 Fifth Street, Manistee, MI

Telemark emigration lists show: Johan Kristensen 20, söman (seaman), Porsgrunn (Te) 1883 til Chicago med Drammen 25/3. But, Johan and Caroline were married in 1882, so how could this be? But interesting that Johan’s father was also a seaman, so this entry merits further investigation.
